Stour Wood Camp Site, Wrabness

Wrabness Woods campsite is situated in the north eastern part of  Essex, approximately 5 miles from the historic town of Harwich. Ordnance Map 150,  Ref 195313.

It is owned and managed by the 1st / 2nd Parkston Scout Group.

The site is set in a secluded field of approximately one and a half acres, about 400 yards from the B1532. Access to the field is by our private footpath which runs in a northerly direction, alongside the eastern side of the Woods. Unfortunately there is no parking at the site, however, there is parking by the roadside opposite the gate to the footpath.

To help with getting your equipment to the camp site, we have a large trolley, which makes moving your equipment very easy. It is also used for taking wood from the wood supply by the gate, to the camp site.

The campsite is very basic, no shops, no

TV, no music. Perfect !!!!!!!!!!

We have a mains water supply, which with the open brick/metal built kitchen, is perfect for the short overnight stay, or for the long weekend.

There are two chemical toilet areas, the male one being a double wooden facility, with a urinal at the rear, and for the ladies a toilet tent can be erected.
There is also a seperate open fronted hut for washing.

For use in the kitchen there is a 6 ring gas cooker
( gas is supplied ), but if you want to use your own fire, or BBQ, it's not a problem.
The camp fire is a  focal point of the site, and we have a large drum BBQ.
There is normally a good supply of wood for the fires.

Also at the site are four picnic tables, each capable of sitting 6 people.

CAMP FIRES
We have to supply our own wood, so please use the wood sparingly. There is usually enough wood for small camp fires in the evenings.

RUBBISH
All burnable waste should be burnt in the circle. All tins should be flattened and placed in the bin provided. All glass jars, bottles, etc should also be placed in the bins provided.

THE HUTS
There are three huts at the site which contain site equipment. They should not be used for sleeping. However, in extreme circumstances, the largest hut, the Wardens hut may be used.

GENERAL RULES

Uniform should normally be worn by all uniformed members entering or leaving the site. At night particularly, noise carries a long way and in order to maintain the existing good  relations with the householders in the vicinity, all campers should exercise the usual rules of good camping behaviour.
If any damage is caused, the Group concerned will be held responsible for the payment of any
necessary repairs.

                        STOUR WOOD
To the west of the site lies Stour Wood. This is a Nature Reserve, is owned by the RSPB, and is open to members of the public. The wood may be used for the playing of wide games, walks and access to the foreshore of the river Stour. NO WOOD SHOULD BE TAKEN FROM THIS AREA, EITHER LIVING OR DEAD.

Please make sure that you have the necessary camping permits for the site.

The site is not a 'Camp Site' as such, in that it does not have a permanent Warden, neither is it a 'Green Field' site, as running water, and toilets are provided. If in doubt please discuss with your own District Commissioner, or contact Brian Mayo, at the address below.

The site is for experienced campers only.
